Service 2/15/2020 (Learning Outcome 6)
This weekend I was able to help create lunch bags to donate the kidsmeals. For my National Charity League class I was in charge of creating a philanthropy activity that my whole class could participate in while at a safe distance. I chose kids meals because right now many kids who would normally be getting several meals everyday from school, are not able to get that food that they need, so it seems like a very relavent organization to donate to at the moment. All around the world there are people living in mass poverty and not getting proper nutrition, so even just starting local in Houston seems like a way to take a step towards stopping this problem. Each bag contained nutritious food and snack items that could give the kids what they needed, especially since they wouldn't be at school. Although there were only nine of us, we were able to make over 100 bags to donat to kids meals. In the moment it didn't seem like that many, but now thinking about feeding 100 kids lunch that they might not get to have otherwise is a very rewarding experience.
This is a part of learning outcome 6, because although I was just working in the Houston area, hunger is a problem people are facing worldwide. By starting on a small scale and helping just a few people, that is more people who are going to have food for that meal and be happier and healthier. If more people began to get engaged in activities like this it would begin to make a larger impact in more communities and places which could continue to lessen this problem around the world.
