Service - 10/28/2020 (Learning Outcome 7)

Gardening is probably one of my least favorite activites. It's hard work and I never really feel like I'm getting anything out of it. So when I found out I was going to be gardening at Avondale house, a school for people living with autism, I was not excited as I should've been. Autism is something that effects people worldwide and effects people in differnet ways. Avondale House works to teach life skills to people and also provide housing. So once I got there to start gardening, I realized it would probaly be best to put my dislike of gardening aside, and instead try to do something nice so that the people living and going to school there would be able to have a beautiful garden to look at. The gardening we did consisted of weeding, planting some foxtails, and laying mulch and soil. It was difficult work, and not very comfortabnle to be working on a pavement sidewalk. But after we were done, I was amazed with how much we had acheived. Everything was so much more beautiful...

One of my favorite ways to spend the weeknights is at band practice. This is an hour and a half of my Tuesday nights where I get to spend time with my friends and play music, two things I enjoy doing. We get together in someone's backyard and work together to come up with, learn, and play songs. Although many people don't often realize, it can be much more difficult to play with a band than it is to play music by yourself. It requires listening to eachother and following along. You cannot simply play whatever, whenever, you actually have to listen to other people and make sure you are playing cohesively in a way that sounds good for other listeners. Although at first it can be difficult to play together, once you do you realize how much of a benefit it gives to the music. Everything sounds better and fuller, and it is just more enjoyable to listen to. You also realize that when you are playing in sync with others you are having more fun because you know you are creating someth...

As a co president of our schools Student Ambassadors, I wanted to do something really special to make all of the ambassadors feel special. So with the help of my co president we came up with the idea of delivering cookies to all of the ambassadors. This would be a way that they could feel both welcomed, but also get a tasty treat. The first thing I had to do was figure out what kind of cookies to make. Since I am a somewhat indecisive person, this took a while, but after settling on a sugar cookie and a maple cookies (to go along with fall) I got to work baking them. The everything was going very smoothly and by the end of the day it was time to start delivering the cookies. This was the most difficult part because it took plotting out everyones addresses and finding the most effective work. I used to help of my co president and another ambassador to be in charge of delivering some of the cookies, so it was not all the job of one person. This proved to be very effective because we coul...
