Service 11/20/2020 (Learning Outcome 4)

Throughout the world there are people living in poverty and starvation. During COVID-19 this problem has only worsened as many people lost there jobs and are no longer able to feed their families. One organization that takes action agains this problem of global hunger, but on a more local scale, is Kids Meals. This organization delivers lunches to kids around Houston who might not otherwise get it, especially if they are not in school. I went to volunteer at Kids Meals to make sandwiches to give out to the kids. There were several other volunteers there, and I was amazed with the productivity as everyone worked together to make as many sandwiches as they could. In the end I think we had to have made at least 500 in about 2 and a half hours, which is a lot! That's a lot of kids who would not otherwise get lunch that are able to be fed because of the work we were doing. This made me feel good about myself and helped me realize that I was doing something productive that was going to make a difference in someone elses day.

This would fall under Learning outcome 4, because throughout the 2 1/2 hours it got a little exhausting. It was a lot of time standing on your feet doing repetitive things, but for a good cause. I have done different project for Kids meals before, but actually going there was a whole different experience and it felt much more helpful. I got to actually see what all the sandwiches I made look like, and how working fast and powering through for those couple of hours can make a difference in someones day. Me getting tired of making sandwiches for someone is nothing compared to the benefit they are going to get from receiving this food so it was important to actually go to Kids meals to be able to see this impact.
