Service - 2/10/2021 (Learning outcome 1)
While we have gone through this pandemic and past year I have grown to realize how fortunate I am to be able to go to school, no matter how different it may be. Being able to leave my house and go for walks has been very helpful for mental health, but for some people they are not as fortunate. My neighborhoods senior center organzies projects for the seniors in our neighborhood who often can't leave their homes, and this week they organized tea kits. To assemble these tea kits my mother and I put teabags, chocolates, biscuits, and honey is mason jars and decorated them with fabric then delivered them to the senior citizens. This task was time consuming, but if I put myself in their place I would be delighted to find a cute little tea kit showing up on my front door. The next day after delivering them we received an email from one of the seniors who we gave a tea kit to. This email expressed the profound gratitude she had for what we had given her. Even though it was just a small mason jar with a few treats, it made her day because she has not been able to leave her house. This email made me realize how grateful someone can be for something so small. She valued this tea kit, and the work we had put into it made it seem like a very special gift. If my mother and I had not put the work into making these kits cute and exciting to open, we likely would not have gotten the same grateful response.
This falls under Learning outcome 1, because I was able to do something for other and realize that I really enjoy helping others, but I was also able to grow a love for service. I enjoy helping people and that motivates me to do it, but it can still be difficult to dedicate the time to help others. By doing this I made the time and I also overcame the challenge of fitting all those treats into such a small mason jar! I think the seniors really enjoyed this and I hope that I am able to carve out more time to do more activities like this to help others.
