Service 10/12/21 (Learning Outcome 5)

During our one week Odyssey trip we took part in many activities, from community building cook outs, to buffalo bayou boat tours and Hispanic culture trips. One of my favorite days, though, came at the very end of Odyssey when we had a volunteer day in the community. The group I was a part of went to Herman Park and we helped clean up trash and pine needles from the trail, and set up for the fun run that was happening the next day. We bean right away by clearing the trails of pine needles and moss balls and other trash that was littered around the area. There were many pieces of confetti like trash and cigarette butts, but we used some tools to clean it up. After a quick break for lunch we proceeded to be what was the bulk of our job: setting up for the fun run. This required carrying tents, chairs and tables to various locations around the park then setting them up and making sure everything was placed correctly. It was some heavy lifting but went by pretty quickly and the volunteer coordinators were extremely grateful to have our help. This work would have been a lot of more difficult if they didnt have 20 people helping them.

This service is a part of learning outcome 5. If we had just been working by ourselves individually trying to move the heavy tents, tables and chairs, this would have taken an extremely long time. However, when we worked together as a group we got it done very quickly and were not as tired as we would have been doing it indivudally. Working together we realized the importance of working collaboratively and also saw the people we were working with and how grateful they were for our contributions.
